Skip Schumaker wins NL Manager of the Year
Schumaker beats out co-finalists Craig Counsell and Brian Snitker for first place in NL Manager of the Year voting.
Congrats to Skip Schumaker on becoming just the fourth Marlins manager to win the Manager of the Year award. Schumaker also became the 10th manager in MLB to win the award in their first season as a MLB manager. Additionally, he led the Marlins to their first 80+ win season since 2010, their first postseason appearance in a full season since 2003, and a league-best 33-14 record in one-run games.
Schumaker credits his success to the other members of the Marlins coaching staff (Brant Brown, Luis Ureta, etc) and Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa, who managed him during his playing days with the Cardinals for seven seasons.
Skip Schumaker definitely deserved this award, as he helped the Marlins overcome adversity throughout the season. For example, the Marlins had three healthy/serviceable starting pitchers during the last two weeks of the season, but they still fought through it and clinched a playoff spot.
